BioPerine® Black Pepper Extract (Piper nigrum)

What is Black Pepper?

Black Pepper is on all of our tables and used in cooking globally, but what's less well known is that Black Pepper has been used in traditional practice for centuries. Buddhist monks in India are said to have carried it on their travels, and it was even applied directly to the eye!

What does the research say about Black Pepper?

Today, research on pepper focuses on more conventional ways of eating it (which means not ground into your eye!). Black Pepper has antioxidant activity, meaning it can neutralise excess 'free radicals' (unstable molecules) produced by environmental stresses like pollution or sunlight. Oxidative stress has been studied in relation to hair and the hair follicle. Piperine, the main active compound in Black Pepper, has been studied alongside other spices for its wider biological activity.

Black Pepper has also been studied for its effect on the absorption of other nutrients, such as Curcumin, the active component of Turmeric.

Why it's in Stay Calm®

Black Pepper Extract that contains piperine, the active compound responsible for black pepper’s numerous health benefits. BioPerine® enhances the bioavailability of various nutrients.

Enhancement of nutrient absorption: Piperine stimulates the secretion of digestive enzymes like pancreatic lipase and amylase, improving the breakdown of macronutrients into absorbable forms.

Modulation of neurotransmitters: Piperine has been shown to influence the levels of various neurotransmitters, including serotonin. Piperine boosts serotonin in areas of the brain like the hypothalamus and hippocampus. Serotonin is essential for regulating mood, stress response, and emotional wellbeing.1

Why it's in OsteoFriend®

Piperine enhances the bioavailability of curcumin by inhibiting hepatic and intestinal glucuronidation. It may also have mild bone-protective effects through anti-inflammatory mechanisms.2

Why it's in Vegan Nights®

Stimulates GABA release: Black Pepper acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter, and its release can stimulate the release of GABA, promoting sleep. Additionally, Black Pepper’s interaction with serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in regulating sleep-wake cycles, can regulate the sleep-wake cycle.3

Why it's in Hair Saviour®

The active compound in Black Pepper, Piperine, increases the bioavailability of other nutrients. It stimulates circulation in the scalp, supporting follicular function. Piperine increases thermogenesis and metabolic rate, promoting the growth of hair.4
