What sets DRV+ apart

The body can't absorb calcium without vitamin D. Vitamin D3 is vital for calcium absorption. Vitamin K2 is vital for the maintenance of bones. The two belong together, which is why we pair them.

Vitamin D3 is usually made from lanolin in sheep's wool. Our high-strength D3 (2,500IU) comes from green algae and is paired with K2 as MK-7, the form with the longest half-life in the body.

What is the best Vitamin D supplement?

According to BBC Good Food 'tried and tested' reviews of best vitamin d supplements, DRV+ (Formerly DR.VEGAN®) Vitamin D3 is rated 'Star Buy' and best Vitamin D3 supplement.

With a star rating of 5/5, and tested for taste, flavour, nutrient profile, additives, dietary requirements and value for money, the independent review comments "Each tasteless capsule provides 63 micrograms (2,500 IU) of vegan vitamin D3 – a high-strength but safe daily dose. They’re easy to take with food and come in plastic-free, compostable packaging. The additive- and allergen-free formula is certified by respected industry bodies and completely plant-based. For anyone wanting a clean, reliable vitamin D3 supplement, this is a straightforward and sustainable option."

How much Vitamin D3 should my client be getting?

Optimal levels in the blood are between 75-100nmol/l. It is recommended your client boosts their Vitamin D levels during the winter months when they’re not getting as much from natural sunlight. However, each person’s levels are different and we would advise that they get their levels tested at the GP or do a finger prick test at home for £29.

What is the best type of Vitamin D?

The most effective source of Vitamin D is D3 from plant sources such as green algae, or animal sources such as lanolin or sheep’s wool. D2 is an alternative source from plants such as mushrooms grown in UV light, but it is less effective at increasing vitamin D levels in the blood. DRV+ (Formerly DR.VEGAN®) Vitamin D is D3 from green algae, the more effective form. Vitamin D is fat-soluble so absorption is improved when it's taken with food containing some healthy fats.

What is Vitamin D?

Vitamin D is one of the essential vitamins required for the body to function properly. There are two forms of Vitamin D: the form obtained from the sunshine is Vitamin D3, when the skin is exposed to UVB rays, while Vitamin D2 is obtained through foods we eat. Only very small amounts - about 10% approximately - can be obtained through foods. This is why topping up Vitamin D levels through being outside or through supplements is very important. To achieve the required levels of Vitamin D to avoid a deficiency, it is important to have regular exposure to sunlight, or to take a Vitamin D3 supplement during the darker months.

Does my client need to supplement with Vitamin D?

Individual needs may differ, but if your client is staying indoors for an extended period of time, for instance, in a hospital setting or in a care home, if they are elderly, pregnant or breastfeeding, or generally feeling unwell, it is recommended that they supplement with at least 10 mcg (400IU) of Vitamin D3 all year round.
