CoQ-10 | Coenzyme Q10

What is CoQ-10?

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ-10) is a compound found in almost every cell of the body. It has antioxidant activity and plays a central part in how our cells produce energy. The body makes CoQ-10 itself, but levels naturally fall as we age.

Inside our mitochondria, CoQ-10 is part of the chain of reactions that produces adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the molecule cells use to store and transfer energy for their growth and maintenance.

What does the research say about CoQ-10?

CoQ-10's antioxidant activity is widely studied. Antioxidants 'scavenge' and neutralise 'free radicals', unstable molecules that the body needs to keep in balance.

The heart is one of the most energy-hungry organs in the body, so it's no surprise that much of the CoQ-10 research focuses on the cardiovascular system. CoQ-10 has been studied for its effects on blood glucose and cholesterol levels. CoQ-10 has also been studied during pregnancy.

Why it's in Pregnancy Multinutrient

CoQ10 is an antioxidant that supports mitochondrial function. CoQ10 levels naturally increase during pregnancy, suggesting a role in supporting increased metabolic demands. Research concludes that supplementation with CoQ10 reduces the risk of developing pre-eclampsia in women at risk for the condition.1

Why it's in Women's ProMulti

Coenzyme Q10 production declines as we age. CoQ10 is needed for normal brain function, muscle function and energy production. Additional CoQ10 can be useful in women suffering from fatigue and poor brain function.

Why it's in HeartPro®

Coenzyme Q10 is a lipid-soluble antioxidant and an essential component of the electron transport chain within mitochondria, playing an essential role in ATP production. Due to the high energy demands of the heart, CoQ10 is vital for myocardial function and is particularly important in conditions such as heart failure, ischaemic heart disease, and hypertension. CoQ10 has been shown to improve endothelial function2 by enhancing nitric oxide bioavailability and reducing oxidative stress. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, modulating nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) and reducing the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-α and IL-6.
