Green Tea Extract

What is Green Tea?

Green Tea has been popular in China for thousands of years and is made from the same plant that makes black teas like Earl Grey or English Breakfast. The difference is that Green Tea has not gone through the withering and oxidation process of black teas, which means it keeps more of the leaf's natural compounds. The best known of these are catechins, such as EGCG. Green Tea also contains the amino acid 'theanine'.

What does the research say about Green Tea?

Catechins have antioxidant activity. Antioxidants work against 'free radicals', unstable molecules produced naturally in the body and by things like sunlight and pollution. Green tea extract has been studied for its effects on the skin. A placebo-controlled trial in adult women looked at green tea extract taken as a supplement. Applied to the skin in creams, it has been studied for its effects on skin elasticity and skin moisture.

Green Tea has also been studied in relation to the heart and blood vessels, including its effect on total cholesterol levels.

Theanine has been studied for its effects on brain chemistry, and research has looked at green tea compounds in relation to relaxation, calmness and mood. Next time you're thinking about making a cup of Earl Grey, think about swapping it for Green Tea instead.

Why it's in Weight Management Support

Increased fat oxidation and energy expenditure: Catechins, especially epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), may increase thermogenesis, stimulate SNS (sympathetic nervous system), raise resting energy expenditure and shift respiratory quotient toward fat oxidation.1

Effect on appetite and hormonal regulators: Modulates hormones such as adiponectin and ghrelin; may reduce hunger and improve insulin sensitivity.2

Lipid metabolism improvements: Lowering LDL, total cholesterol; possible effects on hepatic fat.1 A 60-day randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in overweight or class I obese postmenopausal sedentary women: Green Tea extract improved parameters, including reduced waist circumference, improved fat oxidation, increased resting energy expenditure, lower insulin, HOMA, lower CRP.1

Why it's in Skin Saviour®

Green Tea Extract is rich in catechins, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which has potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-ageing effects on the skin.

Antioxidant protection: Neutralises ROS generated by UV radiation, protecting keratinocytes from oxidative damage.3

Anti-inflammatory effects: Inhibits NF-KB activation and reduces the production of inflammatory cytokines, thereby reducing skin redness and irritation.4

Anti-aging properties: EGCG enhances collagen synthesis and prevents its degradation by inhibiting MMP activity.5
