Iodine
Benefits of Iodine
- Thyroid function
- Energy
- Cognitive function
- Form: Potassium Iodide
- Food source: Iodine-fortified plant milks, iodised salt and seaweed (the iodine content of seaweed varies widely).
What is Iodine?
Iodine is an essential mineral. Most iodine in the UK diet comes from dairy and seafood, and not all plant milks are fortified with it, so vegans need to think about where theirs comes from. Many popular meal replacement and protein shakes don't include it either.
What does Iodine do?
Iodine contributes to the normal production of thyroid hormones and normal thyroid function. It also contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, normal cognitive function, normal functioning of the nervous system and the maintenance of normal skin.
Iodine is used directly in making thyroid hormones. The thyroid makes the hormone T4, and some T4 is then converted around the body, including in the liver, into T3, the more active form. This conversion relies on enzymes that need selenium. Selenium contributes to normal thyroid function. Thyroid hormones are involved in our metabolic rate, energy levels, digestive system and heart, as well as a range of other processes and organs.
The body's need for iodine increases during pregnancy. Research has looked at iodine and thyroid hormones during pregnancy and iodine intake before and during pregnancy.

Why it's in Daily Multivitamin and Women's ProMulti
Iodine is an essential mineral necessary for the synthesis of thyroid hormones. Iodine is a critical component of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), hormones that regulate metabolism, growth, and development. Adequate Iodine levels are essential for maintaining normal thyroid function and preventing goitre. Thyroid hormones, produced from Iodine, play a key role in regulating metabolic processes, including energy expenditure, protein synthesis and fat metabolism.
Why it's in Pregnancy Multinutrient
Iodine is required for normal thyroid function. Inadequate levels impair the development of foetal nerve myelination, cell differentiation, and maturation. Iodine insufficiency during pregnancy increases the rate of miscarriage, causes a reduction in birth weight, and increases infant mortality rates. Maternally deficient neonates are at high risk of cognitive impairment.1
Why it's in Kid's ProMulti
Iodine sufficiency is essential for thyroid hormone synthesis and neurodevelopment. Even mild deficiency in school-aged children has been associated with reduced IQ scores and poorer reading ability.2
Why it's in Men's ProMulti
Iodine is essential for the production of T3 and T4 regulates metabolism, energy levels, and thermogenesis. In men, thyroid dysfunction can contribute to weight gain, fatigue and cognitive impairment.3
Why it's in Hair Saviour®
Iodine is an essential trace mineral needed for the production of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4). Thyroid hormones regulate hair growth, and an imbalance can lead to hair thinning or loss. Iodine supports thyroid function, a normal metabolic rate, and a normal rate of hair growth.
