What is Rhodiola Extract?

Rhodiola, also known as arctic root or golden root, is a herb that grows in cold mountainous regions. It contains over 140 active compounds, the best studied being 'rosavin' and 'salidroside'. You can read more about Rhodiola in our vitamins and minerals guide.

Rhodiola is an adaptogen, a herb traditionally used in relation to the body's response to stress.

What does the research say about Rhodiola Extract?

A review of Rhodiola and stress management looked at its influence on the release of stress hormones and on energy metabolism. Other studies have looked at its effects on stress, mood and cognition.

The adrenal glands, which release stress hormones, also play a big role in how the body manages blood sugar and energy. An open-label study of 100 people measured fatigue levels over 8 weeks of taking Rhodiola, and another exploratory trial looked at Rhodiola in relation to work-related stress.

Why it's in Stay Calm®

Rhodiola Rosea is an adaptogenic herb that has been studied for its ability to reduce stress, combat fatigue, and promote emotional balance. Its main bioactive compounds include rosavins and salidroside, which help manage stress and promote a sense of calm.

Regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis: Rhodiola modulates the stress response by balancing cortisol production. The active compounds in rhodiola help reduce the release of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) from the hypothalamus. CRH typically triggers a cascade that leads to cortisol production.

Enhancing neurotransmitter activity: Promotes serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine balance, improving mood and emotional resilience.1 Inhibits monoamine oxidase (MAO), which helps maintain healthy neurotransmitter levels.2

Adaptogenic properties: Increases resistance to physical, emotional, and environmental stressors.3 A randomised controlled trial looking at how Rhodiola affects anxiety, stress, mood, and cognition found that those who took Rhodiola reported feeling less anxious, stressed, angry, confused, and depressed, with overall better mood compared to those who didn’t take it.4
