What are Bilberries?
Bilberries, or European Blueberries, were one of the first foods to be labelled a 'superfood'. Bilberries are rich in natural plant pigments called 'anthocyanins', which give them their deep colour. They also contain related compounds called proanthocyanidins. Both have antioxidant activity, meaning they can neutralise 'free radicals' (unstable molecules) in the body. The darker the berry, the more of these pigments it contains, so Bilberries are a very good source of these natural antioxidants.
The word 'superfood' is thrown around a lot these days, and the list of so-called superfoods seems to be growing every day. Bilberries were there from the start.
What does the research say about Bilberries?
Blueberries, close relatives of bilberries, have been compared with other common fruits for their antioxidant activity.
Collagen is the stretchy, structural protein of your skin. Researchers have looked at the phenolic compounds in blueberries and skin cells, including in the context of UV exposure, pollution and diet.
Blueberries have also been studied in relation to the heart and circulation. Studies have looked at their effects on blood pressure, including in women after the menopause, and on markers of oxidation in the blood after a meal.

Why it's in Screen Eyes™
Bilberry contains anthocyanins, which are powerful antioxidants that help protect retinal cells from oxidative stress and inflammation, key factors implicated in the development of age-related eye diseases.1 Bilberry extract improves night vision, enhances visual acuity, and reduces eye fatigue, making it excellent for those who engage in prolonged screen time or low-light activities. Bilberry has been investigated for its potential to support retinal circulation, which may further protect against degenerative eye conditions.1
Why it's in Skin Saviour®
Bilberry Extract is a rich source of anthocyanins, natural pigments with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These anthocyanins support microcirculation in the skin, promote collagen stabilisation, and protect against UV-induced photodamage.
UV protection: Long-term exposure to ultraviolet rays can cause dryness, roughness, pigmentation, and a loss of elasticity. Studies have shown anthocyanins to contribute to the repair of photoaged skin. Anthocyanins decrease skin photoaging by reducing oxidative stress, alleviating the inflammatory response, improving collagen synthesis, alleviating DNA damage, and inhibiting pigmentation.2
Collagen preservation: Bilberry anthocyanidins inhibit MMPs,3 which are responsible for the degradation of extracellular matrix proteins like collagen and elastin.
